It’s almost officially that time of year where we can embrace sandals once again. After what feels like an endless winter with our feet bound in trainers and boots, it is now just about warm enough to bear our toes. In South Africa, I had the perfect opportunity to test drive a new pair of sandals or two, discovering some new favourites which will join me across my travels this summer.
Pool sliders had their heyday last year, and this time round, summer is all about elegant, classic sandals. We are yet to shake off Spring’s 70s obsession; I don’t know about you but my obsession with Chloe’s tie-up wedge sandals in still going strong, and I’ve already discovered my perfect pair that embraces that trend but without the hefty price tag.
I was challenged by Ugg to express what Summer means to me, using their beautiful wedge Fitchie sandals, and this Summer is due to be full of beautiful destinations. I’ll be travelling through Yosemite and Santa Monica in California, exploring the Greek Islands aboard a yacht, and jetting to the other side of the world back to Ugg’s home ground – Australia!
My Ugg sandals first adventure, however, was to South Africa. Scroll down to see how I styled them for a classic evening look, and discover a more casual evening look in this previous post!
Summer sandals are often designed not for comfort, but for fashion. They don’t allow for those lumps and bumps that can cause blisters on the tops of our toes or the back of our heels. For me, choosing the right pair means that I can enjoy exploring new destinations and not having to worry about what’s on my feet – they’ve got to be beautiful yes – but comfort is always the most important thing. It should come as no surprise therefore that my favourite pair are created by the folks who bought us what is universally known as the most comfortable shoes ever to have existed – yes, I’m talking about Ugg boots – and it’s obvious that a comfortable fit was a top priority when designing the shoes. Keep reading for my tips on choosing your perfect summer sandals, ensuring that you don’t compromise on comfort when looking fabulous!
How To Choose your Perfect Sandal
Buy the Right Size!
This sounds obvious, and it is, but so often I’ve heard of friends buying a smaller size because ‘It just looks more cute’ or going up a size because they didn’t want to wait for their true size to come in stock. This will only leave you with blisters and foot pain – definitely not want you want whether on your travels or on your home stomping ground.
Look out for Arch Support
Most sandals, wedles, flip flops and flats aren’t designed to be supportive, and lots of walking can cause tired legs and arch cramps. When shopping for Summer footwear, look for support. My Fitchie sandals have a T bar strap which keeps my foot firmly in place, as well as extra padded support on the arch, so despite the height, they remain comfy even after hours of wear.
Consider your Wardrobe
Will you be wearing your sandals with trousers or skirts? Long dresses or short shorts? If your legs will be covered then you want the straps to be kept simple, in order to keep that silhouette looking sleek, while bare legs allow you to be more adventurous with your straps. The most practical style has straps that end at your ankles, and that sit flat against the skin – keeping your wardrobe options endless.
