Describe your Style in 3 Words…
Ah, personal style. An elusive expression, does it really exist? The truth is, our personal style is always evolving. We can love a certain style but still appreciate a handful of others. Recently I feel like I’ve finally settled down and cemented my own personal style. Having a blog almost acts as a document that I can flick back through, noting how my style has changed over the past two years, but recently, I’ve got it. I’ve found, and stuck to, a style which just feels right. It’s girly, feminine, elegant and classic and while I’ve always dressed in this way, I’ve dipped in and out of trends, but it’s when I dress in this way that I feel my most fashionable self.
Here are a few steps to discovering that particular look to make you feel your most fabulous.
Label It
Take a moment to really look at those fashion instagram accounts that you follow, those inspiration photos. Now ignore the names, the hashtags and focus on the outfits. What words describe the vibes of the looks? Are they modern, edgy? Or are they professional and sleek? Settle on a handful of words that feel true to your style (you’ll probably notice a lot of similarities) and make a note of them for future reference, as they will help you to clarify your very own look.
Snap the Best Ones!
You don’t have to be a fashion blogger to take a photo of your outfit, and on those days when you walk out the door feeling like your most stylish self, take a snap for your future reference. You don’t need to Instagram it (but hey, why not?!) but keep it for a record of those outfits that epitomise your true personal style, and on days when you need some outfit inspiration you’ll have a whole gallery to choose from – and the best part? The pieces are already in your wardrobe!
Choose A Statement Piece
Fashion icons all have their signature pieces – think Jackie O. and her oversized sunglasses, or Audrey Heburn with her cropped trousers and dainty ballet flats. Fashionable women always own a signature item or two that becomes part of their style identity, and yours can be as simple as a personal piece of jewellery, or something statement such as a leopard coat. There’s nothing to say that it can’t change every now and then, and perhaps your signature could be a colour? Recently all of my #ootds have contained blush pink in one way or another, and this has become my signature.
Take note of Repeat Offenders!
Open up your wardrobe, and what do you see? A whole section devoted to striped tees? A block of grey? Well, there’s a reason that your closet has an abundance of a certain item. You purchase these pieces time and time again because they make you feel happy, comfortable and they suit you! As long as the item in question is flattering and works for your current style, we say long live repeat offenders! As mentioned above, it’s no bad thing to rely on a signature staple piece.
Play to Your Strengths
What do people always compliment you on? Is it your hourglass figure or toned back? Wearing clothes that play up to your best assets will ensure you always look stylish, no matter what is currently trending. Plan your looks based on your best feature, and don’t be afraid to flaunt it!
Identify the Odd One Out
Is there a piece or two within your wardrobe that sticks out like a sore thumb? Something that doesn’t fit in with the overall vibe? For me it’s a black leather jacket amongst a sea of pastels and florals. That’s the outlier. Chances are, your odd one out symbolises a style you like, perhaps something you’ve wanted to rock but aren’t fully comfortable trying. If you’re looking to evolve your style, why not consider pieces that feel more aspirational instead of completely different to your usual style.
Shop The Look
The Whole Package
Personal style isn’t just clothing and accessories, but beauty too. If you aren’t happy with your beauty look then you’re never going to feel as fashionable as possible. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles, and figure out which shades make you feel the best. Do you feel most confident with a killer cat eye? Does a soft nude lip give you that selfie worthy feeling? Make it your signature beauty look. I have tons of beauty videos over on YouTube if you fancy trying something new.
Trust Your Instincts
I believe in this saying so much, not just when it comes to fashion but so many life decisions! When it comes to your wardrobe, wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you have a feminine-meets-classic style like me, then wearing edgy pieces is going to look unnatural. If you align with Rihanna’s tough meets glamorous look then a chintzy twin-set is going to look almost comical! More than likely, you’ve already got a fabulous sense of style, so embrace it! Refine it, don’t fight it.
What’s your personal style? How did you discover it?
