Healthy Swaps You Can Make Ahead of the New Year
Many wait for January to make positive changes in their lives, but January can be a bit gloomy here in the Northern hemisphere. That’s why we think December is a great month to begin making small healthy changes, as it will have you feeling great during the most indulgent month of the year, plus it will mean that your healthy habits are in full swing by January, giving you a head start. Here are some healthy tweaks you can make to get ahead of the curve.

Switch to a natural deodorant
Over the last few years, I’ve been on a journey of discovery in terms of learning more about health and wellness. Learning about nutrition has been a key part of that for me, however I have also learnt that what you put on your body is just as important as what you feed it with.
If you watch my YouTube Channel, I’m sure you will already know how much I love Wild. Wild produce delicious-smelling natural deodorants which are beautifully presented in sustainable, reusable cases. You simply purchase the case once (and personalise it with your name if you want!), and then you can subscribe to monthly compostable refills which means you’ll never run out of deodorant, without even having to think about it.
The main reason I switched to using Wild deodorant several years ago was because their products do not contain aluminium salts or parabens, meaning they won’t block your pores, without compromising on efficacy; they keep you feeling fresh for 24 hours.
Wild do not only make deodorants – they also produce wonderful refillable body washes and lip balms. Switching to Wild’s full range is a quick and easy way to reduce your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Switch to organic produce
Charlie and I believe it’s really important to consider what we’re putting into our bodies, and through reading several fascinating books such as Spoon Fed by Tim Spector, and Ultra-Processed People by Dr Chris van Tulleken, over the last few years we have really changed the way we eat. One of the key changes we have made is to choose organic produce wherever possible, to try to reduce the amount of harmful pesticides we are exposed to.
We get the vast majority of our produce from Daylesford Farm, Riverford Organic and Pipers Farm. Getting our food from farm shops rather than supermarkets has the added benefit of supporting British Farmers which is also very important to us.
Organic food can be expensive, and if you’re not ready to go full-on organic, perhaps you could start with switching to organic for the produce that holds onto the most pesticides, such as berries, spinach and apples (google the dirty dozen for the full list).

Switch to food-grown supplements
Following on from my last point, it’s also important to consider what’s in your supplements. The supplement industry is not very well regulated, and therefore many supplements are full of fillers and binding agents. That’s why Charlie & I love Wild Nutrition; their supplements are food-grown meaning our bodies actually recognise and absorb the beneficial nutrients, plus they don’t contain nasty ingredients.

Switch to barefoot shoes
The final switch you could make ahead of the New Year is switching to barefoot shoes. Wearing ‘normal shoes’ all the time is actually harmful for our feet, as they keep our feet restricted, preventing our feet from spreading properly. This can lead to foot problems, and even knee and hip problems in later life, which is why I’ve incorporated many pairs of Vivobarefoot shoes into my collection.
If you’re new to barefoot shoes, I’d recommend starting with a pair of Primus Lites for the gym, particularly for weight-lifting, which will help to improve your balance and form. Once you’re used to those, perhaps you could get a pair of Gobis. Begin wearing them for short walks, and gradually increase your use of your barefoot shoes over time, as it takes a while for your foot muscles to strengthen and adjust to the new style of shoe.
