How To Update Your Work Wardrobe for Autumn

Autumn is upon us!

As a new season arrives, we finally bid farewell to our light silk blouses and dainty summer dresses and instead bring out our workwear wardrobe for the cooler months. A switch up of fabrics, colours and layers, it’s a chance to refresh your style and play around with some new trends, perhaps something you’ve not considered trying out before! Personally in the summer my wardrobe is made up of lighter colour fabrics, pleats and frills, but in Autumn I love the opportunity to introduce some deeper shades and soft cosy fabrics.

When it comes to finding comfort and style, as well as polished and professional pieces, Boden is the perfect place to go. Your workwear pieces are items that you’ll wear day after day, so quality is key, and the pieces I’ve invested in from Boden never let me down – whilst the timeless styles work season after season. Whether it’s a classic coat, or a ‘treat yourself’ cosy cashmere piece, the timeless British retailer has styles that you can wear time and again and always look and feel fabulous.

Whether you’re looking to refresh your Autumn workwear wardrobe with a few carefully curated pieces or totally starting from scratch, hopefully this post will help to steer you in the right direction!

The best place to start is by mixing new autumnal styles with your favourite summer blouse or top. These tweed trousers for example would work beautifully with a lightweight summer silk tee, but can be switched with a cosy knitted piece when the temperatures drop. Your favourite summer tops can be perfect for layering too, add an oversized jumper such as this one, or a cardigan over the top – and voila! A few more months use out of your favourite summer styles!

If you’ve got a favourite style or silhouette that you know works well with your personal style, but the material is too lightweight for autumn, lookout for similar silhouettes in a thicker material, to interprete the classic style into a cool weather appropriate outfit. If you find midi skirts flattering and easy to style, switch your lightweight floral summer favourite for a lined deeper toned style for Autumn. This wool midi skirt is at the top of my wishlist at the moment, paired with a short sleeve blouse for in the office, or a knit for dashing between meetings, it’s a style and silhouette that I know suits me, and the perfect switch for autumn!

Don’t totally rule out patterns that are typically ‘Spring Summer’ too, if you’re comfortable in them within your work wardrobe – a floral dress for example is a perfect way to show off your personality and style but in an easy to wear and appropriate outfit for work.  In Autumn, pair your dress with knee high boots and a wool coat to ensure you’re prepared for the cold months ahead!

Don’t rule out a floral dress either, as a trophy midi will quickly become the cornerstone of your new season wardrobe. A piece that takes all the hassle out of getting dressed in the morning, pair yours with knee-high boots (these ones are the DREAM!) and a wool coat to ensure it’s suitable for the cold months ahead.

An easy trap to fall into in Autumn, especially when it comes to workwear is to limit your colour. Grey, black and white are easy options and work well together, but in Autumn make the most of a new palette of neutrals including plum, rust, navy and beige. These key colours mix and match wonderfully together so you won’t be limiting your options – but if you’re nervous to stray away from your comfort colours, try something a little different like navy for black lovers, or rust if you usually stick to cream and beige. Fans of classic black tops would love this navy knitted top – it’s easy to wear, flattering and works with so many different outfit styles too.
