An At Home Facial
Facials are an investment, I like to tell myself. They are money well spent on the future of my skin, as well as being a pampering experience that allows me to totally switch off for 45 minutes or so, while someone else does the hard work for me.
They are too, however, bankrupting me. When it comes to getting a great facial, of course you pay for the privilege of letting a trained aesthetician work their magic on your complexion, but more than that, you’re paying for the product that they are applying. After analysing my bank statements and stunning myself at the amount I spend on facials, I became determined to find a cheaper solution – an at home facial.
Nothing can quite beat a professional spa treatment – you can’t totally zen out when treating yourself, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be relaxing. The one thing I won’t do is perform my own extractions, but living in a city means that a few days after my skin has been cleared, it’s blocked up again, so I always resent paying someone else to do the job for me.
I recently discovered Swiss Clinic; a brand that develops innovative beauty products and treatments that give you the results that you would expect from a skin clinic or spa facial experience, but from the comfort of your own home. On a mission to find a way of getting that post-facial glow without denting my credit card, I opted for their Skin Renewal treatment; two products – a Skin Roller and Rejuvenating Serum (as seen in the images above) which work to improve skin in a multitude of ways.
The Skin Roller looked daunting at first; a small hand held tool with micro-needles which allow the product to penetrate the skin. At first, I was incredibly delicate, not wanting to scratch the surface of my skin, but I soon realised that the pricks are so minuscule, that you can barely feel or see where you have treated. What you can see, however, are the results.
The Facial Experience
My at-home facial experience begins with a thorough cleanse. I like to remove my makeup with a micellar water, before cleaning the skin with a balm cleanser as I find these the most pampering and luxurious. Caring for our skin shouldn’t be reserved for just a weekly treat, so to kick start my skin renewal, I completed my facial routine every evening for a week to put the products to the test.
After cleansing, I use the Skin Roller all over my face. Applying medium pressure, I roll it over the skin back and forth for just over a minute, until I feel that the skin is evenly treated. The benefit of using the roller is that it creates micro-channels in the skin, allowing the serum to penetrate deeper so that the active ingredients can get a kick start, but it also jump-starts the natural healing process and production of new skin.
I apply one pump of the Rejuvenating Serum into the palm of my hand and pat lightly onto the skin, the serum helps to regenerate the skin improving fine lines and wrinkles, as well as helping with scars, boosting college and improving elasticity.
For my lifestyle it’s perfect – living in the city means my skin becomes clogged and polluted on an almost daily basis, but the treatment feels as though it cleans by skin from deeper within, and over time tightens the skin, and helps to improve enlarged pores – meaning less dirt can enter my skin to begin with.
The Skin Renewal Treatment costs £96 and is available to buy online here.
My Top Tips For an At Home Facial
- Perform the facial at night time. I like to cleanse my skin as soon as I get home in the evening, but I save the treatment until a little later. My skin can be left just a little bit red from the roller, and as we sleep the skin is in ultra-repair mode so you can reap even more benefits from the treatment.
- Make sure your bedding is fresh! Sounds obvious, but ensure you have a freshly washed pillow case (I change my pillow cases every 2 days, and alternate which side I sleep on so it is always fresh and clean) as they can be a bit of a hub or bacteria, as well as dead skin cells, oil from hair and skin, and other pore-clogging particles!
- Don’t rush! I like to savour the experience of pampering my skin. Allocating up to an hour in the evenings means I enjoy the experience and am more mindful about what I am doing to, and applying on my skin.
- Use warm, not hot water for showering, cleansing and rinsing. Too hot or too cold is a little harsh on the skin.
- Why not meditate while you pamper?! I like to focus on my breathing while applying product to my face taking long deep breathes in and out, this leaves me feeling even more rejuvenated after my pampering experience.
After trialling the treatment for 7 days, you can see from the before and after photos that my skin undeniably has a healthy glow and improved tone. This radiance is something I work tirelessly to achieve all year round, and in the cold Winter months it’s especially difficult, and yet despite several long haul flights recently and now being back in the British Isles with frosty temperatures and icy winds, my glow is here to stay.
While I still will be treating myself to a facial every now and then (I can’t resist the opportunity to fall asleep while someone else massages oil into my skin…) I no longer feel the need to rely on them for keeping my skin at it’s healthiest and most radiant. With the right products and the right application, the coveted post-facial glow is something that can be achieved in your very own home, for just a fraction of the price.
