Our Top Tips for Preparing your Home for Autumn
I can’t believe September is here. 2024 is passing by so quickly, and yet at the same time, I feel so ready for Autumn to arrive. If you watch my YouTube Channel, you may have seen my recent autumnal homeware haul; choosing these pieces really got me thinking about the key ways to prepare your home for Autumn!
1 – Consider your lighting
A very simple way to instantly change the atmosphere in your home is by altering the lighting. As we enter Autumn, we want to feel warm and cosy, and the best way to do this is to have lots of lighting sources dotted around the room such as table lamps, floor lamps and wall lights. The type of bulb you pick is also important for the vibe of the room – go for a warmer bulb for a cosier feel.
2 – Bring in autumnal kitchen & dining ware
An affordable way to bring a touch of Autumn into your home is by adding in a few seasonal tableware pieces, such as seasonal bud vases, napkins, mugs and tablecloths. Each time we enter a new season, it’s lovely to be able to create a seasonal tablescape when having friends or family over for a dinner party or a Sunday roast. This year, my autumnal tablescapes will include these gorgeous harvest bud vases from Anthropologie which come in three variations. When offering my guests a coffee or a chai latte it will (obviously!) be served in an adorable pumpkin mug.
3 – Go for more Autumnal flower displays
By the start of September, I’ve certainly had my fill of summery floral displays, and I’m ready for some more autumnal arrangements. For me, autumnal arrangements usually involve dahlias of a rich, deep colour palette such as mauve and maroon, as well as dried hydrangeas. I also like to add wildflowers and seed heads to autumn displays; with poppy seed heads looking particularly effective.
4 – Switch out your cushions
I have followed my own advice on this one and have gone big on the cushion switch over this season! I did a rather large order from Soho Home, full of cushions of all shapes and sizes, and of shades ranging from ochre to rich browns. Oka also have an excellent range of autumnal-toned cushions. If you’re looking for some more affordable cushions, H&M and Zara Home also have some great options.
5 – Bring in some Autumnal home scents
Another simple way to instantly transform the feel of your home is by switching up your home scent. Get yourself a new diffuser or candle involving scents such as cinnamon, amber, fig or bergamot for an autumnal feel. Top marks if the candle is also housed in a wooden pumpkin like this one from Anthropologie!
6 – Have a clear-out
My final tip for preparing your home for autumn is to have a clear-out; this is something I like to do each season to prepare myself mentally and physically for the season ahead. You could do a clear-out your wardrobe in preparation of bringing out your autumn / winter pieces from storage or you could clear and sort out your kitchen cupboards or beauty draw.
