Mary Rose Young Pottery in the Forest of Dean

Back
home in Gloucestershire with the boyfriend’s family over, we took a trip into
the Forest of Dean to visit the colourful pottery studio of local artist, Mary
Rose Young.
Ever since I did work experience with Mary Rose when I was 16, starting up her
jewellery range, I have been in love with her vibrant designs, and make sure I
visit her studio to see her new designs every time we go into the Forest.

Just
like Mary Rose herself, every design is fun, vibrant and adds instant colour to
any room. Years ago we purchased one of her giant teapots as an investment
piece – and with its place on our dining table, it acts as a fantastic
conversation starter with all of our houseguests!

With
her bright pink hair, the lovely Mary Rose creates and throws all of the designs
by hand in her studio below the showroom, and one of her artists, Kate, also
allowed us a sneak peak into Mary Rose’s kitchen – just as colourful as the
studio! Every surface, wall and object is painted in Mary Rose’s signature
flower design.

Visitors to the showroom are invited to visit the studio
downstairs, and can also paint their own plate using Mary Rose’s vibrant
paints. These are no ordinary pottery paints, a tub of red paint which took
years to source the exact shades costs £700! A few special edition pieces are
even made with real gold paint (a pot of which sets the studio back over
£800!!)

With
this in mind, the pieces are not cheap, but each has been made and painted by
hand, and they are certainly an investment
– our teapot is now worth £200 more than when we purchased it a few
years ago! I couldn’t resist leaving the studio empty handed, so I treated
myself to this Zebra Rose Multiflower mug to add to my collection, as well as a
silver rose tile for the bathroom:

The
fabulous pottery is for sale occasionally in Liberty of London as well as in
Harrods, but only by visiting the studio in the Forest of Dean can you get the
full experience! The pottery was featured a few years on Ozzy Osbourne’s TV
show, and since then Mary Rose has gained several celebrity fans such as Lily
Allen, Mika and Demi Moore.

Many
of the pieces wouldn’t look out of place in a Tim Burton rendition of Alice in
Wonderland, the perfect pieces for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, such as this
wobbly cake stand.

{ Even the Chrismas Tree is crazy! }
If you are lucky enough to be near the Forest of Dean, then it is
100% worth a visit to the fabulous show room, her website can be found here and you
