How To Wear the Polka Dot Trend

How To Pull Off Polka Dots

… without looking like your Mum dressed you!

Something about Polka Dots still seems wonderfully child-like. It takes me back to those care free days when my toughest decision was whether to go for plaits or a pony tail for school. Today though, polka dots are returning; but there’s a fine line between finding a style that’s childlike, and one that’s childish. So in today’s post, I’m going to share a few tips on wearing the polka dot trend without looking like a big kid!

Reaching for modern silhouettes such as this elegant style from is the most important place to start. The is most definitely a ‘grown up’ style thanks to the on trend cold shoulder detail, elegant length and frill hem on both the neckline and the hem. It’s ladylike and demure, while still allowing you to show off your playful side thanks to the fun print. Always opt for good quality fabric. This free flowing design looks ultra luxe despite the affordable price tag, thanks to the cut and quality of the fabric.

Polka dots can be a chic twist on a modern look, such as in this dress. They’re versatility means the pattern can be worn for both casual and smart looks, here I team with blush pink suede heels and a studded designer bag to elevate the look. When wearing polka dots, avoid any accessories with heavy prints or patterns – polka dots are one print which do not like to share the limelight!

Toughen Up Your Look

Create a sophisticated finish to your polka dot look by toughing up your makeup. Here I’ve opted for an intense smokey eye created with a mixture of cream and shadow, as well as a brown eyeliner to add drama to the look. A bouffant hair style and minimal accessories complete the look.

Timeless Appeal

The beauty of investing in polka dots for your wardrobe is that they’re totally timeless, and won’t date from one season to the next. Just like stripes, the trend is bold enough to make a statement, but not in an OTT shouty way. For this reason, I like to opt for neutral colours (don’t I always?!) that are easy to mix and match into your wardrobe.

The beauty of spots (as with classic stripes) is that they are timeless and won’t date from one season to the next. They’re impactful enough to make a statement, but not in a startling, shouty way. When brought to life in a neutral colour palette, “they become easy to mix and match into your wardrobe”, says de Swaan Arons when it comes to styling dotty essentials up or down.

The polka dot trend is back in full force this spring, so I hope my tips will help you to embrace it!
